Problems with Solar Lights
The problem with solar lights is that the fixture simply does not get enough energy to fully illuminate. This is because the rechargeable battery inside is providing 1.2-1.5 volts. Compare that to 10.8-12 volts on a professional system. Also top battery manufacturers say their product will at best get rechargeable of charges. And that is inside, out of the elements. The newer rechargeable batteries don't like to be fully drained before recharge. So no matter how sunny of a spot you put solar lights, the battery charge will degrade.
And the next time you see them at the big-box home store, take a closer look. They have all been re-wired for direct power. So you are seeing the brightest they will ever be under ideal circumstances.

DIY Kits Fall Short
Elegant Outdoor Lighting? Not with a DIY kit.Limitations of DIY kits include:
- No way to get even illumination among the lights
- No way to compensate for voltage drop along the wire.
- Fixture connectors exposed to elements and corrosion.
- Materials include aluminum and cheap plastic. Fixtures tend to corrode quickly.
-Even the best store lighting kit only have copper "coated" fixtures.
Does this mean someone couldn't get fantastic results from a DIY kit? NO! It would just be a very difficult setup, would require a lot of maintenance, and would need someone with an extensive knowledge of lighting techniques.
